Mini-Review - Tekken 6 (PS3)

My Background: Tekken has been my favourite beat-em up / fighting game series since 1995. I loved putting many hours into mastering characters and the story that revolved around it. In total I put in 25+ hours into the online mode of Tekken 5: DR.

What you need to know about this game: The character customisation options have been greatly expanded and the online matches that use them are seamless most of the time. All the story takes place inside the the Scenario Mode. If you didn't like Tekken before you won't like it now.

My problem with this installment of Tekken is that it's taking the series in a direction that seems like a really bad idea. There's a specific new addition to the gameplay called the bounce system. Tekken 5 itself was a decent balance of juggle combos and skillful playing. But the bounce system thoroughly throws Tekken 6 in the direction of the former, becoming little more than a juggle masher. If you're knocked skywards, you'll easily lose from a third to a half of your health instantly. And without any way to prevent this through reversals or evades, matches aren't fun anymore. Especially since Super Street Fighter IV has taken defensive gameplay to a great level with focus attacks, spacing, hit confirming and so many other forms of all-round play.
As for the story, it's embedded in the Scenario Mode, forcing you to play through 6's version of Tekken Force Mode before you get access to the story. Even when you unlock characters (one by one), story mode is four battles and an ending.

I'm very concerned. Is this all the Tekken team can add for a genuine sequel? 3/5 - Rent It
